Since 1977, David has worked with civil engineers, architects, landscape architects and contractors in design, construction and maintenance of every kind of interlocking, permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP), paving slab and grid application. Besides publishing dozens of articles, peer-reviewed technical papers, guide specifications and many ICPI Tech Spec technical bulletins on all of these segmental concrete pavements, Mr. Smith has written three ICPI student and instructor manuals for contractors and taught many classes. He has also authored three design idea books for residential, commercial and municipal applications.
Besides writing ICPI’s 120-page manual on PICP in 2017, Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements, he is co-editor of a 260-page ASCE report on permeable pavement released in 2015. He is a member of an ASCE committee that developed ASCE 68-18, a national design standard for PICP slated for a November 2018 release. Starting in 1994, he has been editor of the quarterly Interlock Design magazine (circ. 24,000) which features segmental concrete pavement projects. Since 1988, Mr. Smith has written or revised several product standards and test methods through his membership in ASTM. In recent years, Mr. Smith manages a range of industry research projects including studies on pavement smoothness, full-scale structural testing and PICP performance studies.
